May 31, 2007 07:56 AM: once. When I saw Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova opening in NYC for Damien Rice; I was amazed at how beautiful their music, and how natural they were on stage. Imagine that translated to a movie, and you've got the movie "Once." Sadly, it's only in limited release right now, perhaps never making it to West Texas. I've read it compared to Music and Lyrics but without the Hollywood and bad music. It's an Irish indie film that, at many times, shows some ragged edges. But for me, I loved...
May 20, 2007 03:39 PM: Anju Gill FoundationLast night, I attended the kickoff event for the Anju Gill Foundation. It was a neat evening at Bend Studio in Dallas featuring two singer/songwriters. Rahim Quazi was up first and offered a soulful folksy sound, reminiscent of Amos Lee. Salim Nourallah played last. The foundation's focus will be that of promoting Texas singer/songwriters and providing financial means for those to show their passions....
May 14, 2007 01:26 PM: tonight.Ben Gibbard, David Bazan, and Johnathan Rice @ Granada Theatre. I HATE EVERYONE! Whitney calls me a "snob" and Lee calls me an "asshole", but I can't help it that I have standards. I like nice things, I like nice people, and I tolerate very little that strays from what I agree with. Don't like it? We weren't friends anyway... All of my friends are basically like this and I don't know what makes the distinction between "good" people and the rest. So last night Lee and I went...
May 14, 2007 08:13 AM: defend the honorConsider the white male reader who, after reading a column on the subject, wrote to inform me that "no 'Latinos' fought in the war. They were Americans." That's a lovely thought, and I can't wait to share it with those in my grandparents' generation who suffered through decades of second-class citizenship. They weren't "Mexicans." They were Americans all along. How about that? They'll be so relieved....
May 11, 2007 09:09 AM: concert week; update.Lee and I are officially more than half way through our week of concerts. On Monday night, we were lucky enough to see Damien Rice, live at the Majestic Theatre in downtown Dallas. The show was magnificent, as expected, and continues my belief that Damien Rice is one of the greatest live performances you can see these days. It's amazing to me that 4 musicians can produce such a large and complex sound as his band can. Last night, we went to the Nokia Theatre at Lone Star Park in...
May 7, 2007 02:53 PM: tonight.Damien Rice tonight at The Majestic Theatre. Life is good....
May 3, 2007 02:51 PM: the whipI don't know what's more bizarre, Kenny Mayne writing something that's serious, or Yum! thinking this is a good idea. I have every faith that the trainers and jockeys involved in the 133rd Kentucky Derby will disregard the special promotion that Yum! Brands has devised. I'm as certain of this as I am Affirmed won the last Triple Crown. I know how much these trainers and jockeys care for the game, for their horses. It's an honor to enter the starting gate for the Kentucky Derby, a greater honor to...
May 1, 2007 07:53 AM: zericaWhitney and I attended Zane and Erica's wedding on Sunday. As we speak, they're living it up in the Dominican Republic on their honeymoon. Congrats to those guys......
