Consider the white male reader who, after reading a column on the subject, wrote to inform me that "no 'Latinos' fought in the war. They were Americans."That's a lovely thought, and I can't wait to share it with those in my grandparents' generation who suffered through decades of second-class citizenship. They weren't "Mexicans." They were Americans all along. How about that? They'll be so relieved.
Don't forget the German Americans who fought in the war, I will be offended if they are left out. My Grandparents never called themselves German Americans. Something lost in translation. Name was Fisher, found out later that they had changed it from Fischer (German) to assimilate as Germans were suspect as the Italians in Denison. All of my uncles on my Mother's side fought in the war. I only heard German a few times. One time my Grandmother was having a heated discussion with the iceman in German. I asked her to teach me German, her remark was a curt "Herbert Jr. you are an American, and will speak English." End of conversation. Sorry
Ruben, I do not feel your pain.
