October 28, 2006 04:35 PM: she's all mine...

When I look at this girl, I wonder how I got so lucky. That smile is kryptonite to me... I remember this tacky old country song called "she don't know she's beautiful." Grammar problems aside, it's one of the traits about Whitney that perplexes me. I tell everyone that I'm doing very well for myself and she doesn't understand. But spend five minutes around her and you'll see what I see. A beautiful, carrying, funny, personable, sarcastic, loving... did i mention beautiful??... woman who loves me as much as...

October 21, 2006 06:24 PM: new lesson learned.

I've learned that if you whine enough publicly, things might happen. All joking aside, I'm very excited to be able to go home for Thanksgiving, courtesy of Whitney and my parents buying a plane ticket this late in the game. For one, it's eased the stress of the long-distance that Whitney and I've been struggling with and it's given me some stuff to look forward to. I'd made tentative plans to go down to the city for the Macy's parade and eat with some friends here, but going home...

October 19, 2006 05:06 PM: surround yourself with people you love...

Here comes a whiney drivel... This week has been one of the worst, scratch that, the WORST i've had since being up here. It all stems from the class I'm in right now, Skills Development III, and the group from hell I've been stuck in. I'll save all the personal bitterness I'm developing for these people and just point out that tomorrow is my last with them for the near future. For one, it's hard to work with people who don't have the same passion and drive that you do,...

October 15, 2006 05:06 PM: imagining a human-free earth...

I ran into a really neat article in the New Scientist about how long the earth would need to revert back into a state where human existence were not obvious. Pretty neat stuff... The same lack of maintenance will spell an early demise for buildings, roads, bridges and other structures. Though modern buildings are typically engineered to last 60 years, bridges 120 years and dams 250, these lifespans assume someone will keep them clean, fix minor leaks and correct problems with foundations. Without people to do these seemingly minor chores,...

October 8, 2006 11:14 AM: wow.

A few days back, I was reading on TUAW about a new mac program called CrossOver that allows you to run Windows programs natively in OS X. I knew about these types of projects, most notable WINE (which this is based on), but didn't know they were close to being ready for prime-time. I downloaded CrossOver this morning and installed. Totally painless and worked from the start... the only problem is that I couldn't think of any Windows software I actually wanted to download. Goes to show you that OS...

October 5, 2006 01:14 PM: ruhlman and bourdain

Going back to the foie gras post from a week or two ago, Michael Ruhlman and Anthony Bourdain have a great little back and forth about the issue over at Salon.com. It's a great read, because it's actually very informative about what consumers need to know and it also shows the insanity of Chef Bourdain. On a Fox News show last spring, in a debate pitting Assemblyman Panter against Ann Coulter (following her disparaging remarks about New Jersey 9/11 widows), Panter defended his colleagues' calls to have retailers pull her...

October 1, 2006 09:51 AM: i had no idea

News like this is very disheartening... Thirty-nine states elect judges, and 30 states are holding elections for seats on their highest courts this year. Spending in these races is skyrocketing, with some judges raising $2 million or more for a single campaign. As the amounts rise, questions about whether money is polluting the independence of the judiciary are being fiercely debated across the nation. And nowhere is the battle for judicial seats more ferocious than in Ohio. An examination of the Ohio Supreme Court by The New York Times found...
