August 31, 2006 06:06 PM: cannot. get. fired.

I ran into a video of Keith Olbermann on MSNBC responding to Donald Rumsfeld's speech from a few days back. If you haven't read or heard about it, Rumsfeld was addressing the American Legion in Salt Lake City and compared the War on Terror to the war against Nazi Germany. Barring the complete idiocy of that analogy, Rumsfeld continued by calling anyone opposed to this Administration immoral and ignorant. I know that no one cares, because we're fat and happy Americans. I know most of you won't watch the...

Still looking good at 24!!...

August 28, 2006 11:47 AM: huh.

The Lexington airport offered a tenser scene. “Everyone on our flight had their cellphones out, calling,” said Diane Boyer, of Versailles, a Lexington suburb, as she left a flight from Atlanta. Ms. Boyer said she had heard about the crash before leaving that morning, but had decided to fly because she did not want to wait to return to her family. In the background, officials periodically announced that the security threat level had been raised to orange. “Our children were worried about us,” Ms. Boyer said, “and we’re just praying...

August 19, 2006 07:36 PM: father hoover (1980 - 2006)

HE'S BACK! my heart is heavy now, as I'm saddened to break the news that Father Hoov died. it was unexpected and i definitely didn't see it coming; but his blog is dead (you didn't think I was talking about him, did you?) For several years, Thoughts From The Third Floor and Former Third Floor provided hours of laughter for those who read. Now, however, Hoov is too much of a bigshot to post anymore. It's like passing the bar has a requisite of giving up on your faithful...

August 19, 2006 03:35 PM: here fishy fishy

Yesterday was the last of seven long, smelly days in Seafood ID and Fabrication. Chef Clark, for the first few days, was a lunatic. Granted, I learned a whole hell of a lot over those seven days, but Chef Clark was something else. Born poor in Missisippi, Chef Clark brought a whole nother attitude to learning that I'd not seen before. I always like to joke with people that the Culinary is the only place where you can have a professor without a Bachelor's degree. Chef Clark quit high school....

August 11, 2006 02:16 PM: my love

It's weird to say that you've loved someone from the first time you met them. It's cliche and often it's untrue, but it certainly applies to how I feel about my girl, Whitney. It's funny, but when people ask us how we met, neither of us really know how to answer. We didn't "know" each other before we met, but we knew each other by a good case of recreational stalking and the following of the others' weblog. Which is funny, because it normally seems creepy and weird, but for...

August 10, 2006 04:41 PM: Chef Clark

One of the first things I noticed about life here at the Culinary is that there is a certain level of underlying grumpiness by much of the student body. I never could finger whether or not it was just the money issue or the dorms or whatever, but there always seemed to be just a little nick of unhappiness in most everyone. I now know why. It's because in the kitchens and in the classrooms, they work you to death. Today, we started Seafood ID & Fabrication after 7 days...

August 6, 2006 07:37 PM: Moscone Center - WWDC 2006

It's Christmas, in the Summer again, for mac users. WWDC 2006 kicks off tomorrow with his Steveness giving the keynote at 1pm EST. Expect new mac's, maybe an ipod update, and a preview of 10.5....

August 6, 2006 12:12 PM: culture gone wild

An interesting look at the founder of "girls gone wild" and how his business grew to what it is today. Also, a very personal look at the man who sells sleaze, but isn't that far removed from it himself. Maybe you've seen the "Girls Gone Wild" infomercials that run on late-night cable, advertising mail-order videos of women exposing themselves ("and more!" as the jackets promise). Francis didn't invent the notion of spring break—and all the binge drinking, flurried hookups, wet T-shirt contests and general you-only-live-once exhibitionism that it entails—but he...

August 2, 2006 03:17 PM: hot times ten

I got back up to New York on Monday. It was an all day affair and definitely something that only a crazy would enjoy. Three flights, a cab ride, and a train ride consumed 15 hours of my life. I used to watch a show on a&e called "airline." It's a weekly documentary of the actions of people who work for Southwest airlines and usually shows some of the crazier passengers and the strange situations. Every once in a while, you'd get to watch as a terminal manager had to...
