May 31, 2005 02:30 PM: "... but social failure."

There was a quick blurb on kottke.org about a new Sleater-Kinney song about an article written about suicides at the Golden State Bridge in the New Yorker. I highly recommend reading it... As a Coast Guard cutter idled in the fifty-five-degree water below, the bridge’s guardians tried to talk Alarab into coming up. “When CNN gets here, I’m back over the other side of the railing,” he promised. One Highway Patrol officer said, “Hey, don’t I know you?” Alarab squinted, and said, “Oh, sure!” They had met during Alarab’s...

May 20, 2005 07:27 PM: Double Standard??

Think Progress points out the inconsistency in the White House's claim on the one hand that a few words in a Newsweek "Periscope" blurb caused deadly rioting in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and President Bush's defense of the decision made by two Rupert Murdoch-owned newspapers, the New York Post and the Sun in Britain, to publish photos of Saddam Hussein in his underwear: President Bush, when asked if he thought the pictures would stoke more anti-Americanism in Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East, voiced some doubt. [...] "You know, I...

May 18, 2005 11:37 AM: the baton

Not one to let an interesting meme die, here’s my part. I’m normally not a fan of chain mail. But when a topic is good, and I can follow the chain back to different blogs and discover a few new artists, I’ll contribute too. Total volume of music on my computer: 23.61 Gb (3909 songs) The last CD I bought: Actual CD: Justin McRoberts "Intersections" Digital CD: Nora O'Connor "Till the Dawn" Song playing right now: "Options" Pedro the Lion Five songs I listen to a lot, or that mean...

May 16, 2005 03:10 PM: the hoov is done

As most of you know, Adam Hoover (a.k.a. Sonar) is moving to CA this week. Tomorrow night, drop by Rocky LaRue's on Broadway between 10:00 - 12:00 to get one more eyeful of the Hoov. He's sexy people, and he's leaving. There's an Open Jazz night at Rocky LaRue's, and we'll be in attendance. Cigars and all....

May 15, 2005 12:01 AM: stupid

This is so dumb, that I'm almost believing it was made up. There a comment for this story that says this whole thing is a comment on society when Alexander Graham Bell appears on the list, yet isn't even American. What do Bill Gates, Richard Nixon, Dr. Phil, Helen Keller and Tom Cruise have in common? According to America Online and the Discovery Channel, those five, and 95 others, are in the running to be voted the "Greatest American" of all time. The two media companies asked their constituents to...

May 13, 2005 08:53 PM: dogs. love and hate.

Ever since last summer when I was taken out by a dog, I've always been a little leery of dogs. Obviously. Tonight, this dog came out of nowhere and got me. Usually, with bigger dogs like this, they just want to chase. They'll run at you, scare you, and then before getting to you, they turn and run with you. This dog ran right at me, went for my right leg, but missed and ran into the back of my bike. The rear of my bike slid into the...

May 13, 2005 10:49 AM: Tres

Three Things That Everyone Is Excited About, But I Am Not: 1) XBOX I caught the first part of the xbox release party last night and Tony Hawk was there. The guy asking questions on the red carpet asked him "what's your favorite video game", and without missing a beat, Tony replied "oh, definitely anything with Mario." I bet that made the XBOX people feel real nice. Seriously though, could that thing be any freaking bigger and uglier? It looks like the old workstation pc's that the monitor would sit...

May 12, 2005 12:31 AM: put me in coach

ESPN is reporting that Major League Baseball finally agreed to allow it's players to play in a World Cup type-tournament. While this sounds a little weird at first, if you're like me, you think the United States would just destroy everyone. But luckily, Page 2 has broken it down into a pretty realistic simulation. Dominican Republic 2B Alfonso Soriano SS Miguel Tejada 1B Albert Pujols DH David Ortiz CF Vladimir Guerrero RF Sammy Sosa 3B Aramis Ramirez LF Jose Guillen C Miguel Olivo Starting pitchers: Pedro Martinez, Bartolo Colon, Odalis...

May 9, 2005 05:12 PM: iTunes users get ready

Something big is about to happen. iTunes 4.8 came out today with native support for video playback. As in, you can load all your movies into iTunes and it will open quicktime when it needs to. So I'm thinking either iTunes Movie Store or video iPod. Hopefully both....

May 9, 2005 11:59 AM: whoops

The UK's Sunday Times is reporting that we're not very smart. THE capture of a supposed Al-Qaeda kingpin by Pakistani agents last week was hailed by President George W Bush as “a critical victory in the war on terror”. According to European intelligence experts, however, Abu Faraj al-Libbi was not the terrorists’ third in command, as claimed, but a middle-ranker derided by one source as “among the flotsam and jetsam” of the organisation. Al-Libbi’s arrest in Pakistan, announced last Wednesday, was described in the United States as “a major breakthrough”...

May 7, 2005 08:03 PM: today

It's been weird. Here's a run-down. 1) This lady's house Seriously? The kid writing acts as if it's just a fun quirkiness, but I'm sure some licensed pyschologists could break it down in a slightly different direction. 2) Stop Signs When I ride, I rarely stop at stop signs. For those who ride, you understand how valuable momentum is and you understand that stop signs are like hills. They make you work harder. In the past, I'd never (i don't think) seen a police office nearby when I ran a...

May 7, 2005 12:23 PM: unreal

The Times has a great story with an even more spectacular photoset concerning high school theatre productions. The story concerns how high-school theatre has taken itself very seriously to the tune of $165,000 productions and full-time theatre assistants. It's definitely worth the look and the read....

May 6, 2005 11:54 PM: we're safe now.

I was watching The Daily Show today with Tom Ridge as the guest. It was interesting for several reasons, one being that Tom Ridge actually seems to have a sense of humor. Not something I thought would be true considering what a total idiot he was forced to look like before the election. Jon Stewart hit him with a good question about the possibility that some of the "terror alerts" were politcally motivated. Of course, he declined and said that you don't mess around with alerts. I'd remind you to...

May 6, 2005 10:40 AM: down with the flag

Those damn liberal judges. WASHINGTON (AP) -- A U.S. appeals court on Friday threw out new federal rules to require anti-piracy technology that would have limited how consumers could record and watch their favorite television programs in the future. The three-judge panel for the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia determined the Federal Communications Commission had exceeded its authority when it announced it would require such technology in digital televisions and other consumer electronic devices sold after July 1. ''This opens up the future for consumers...

May 4, 2005 11:34 PM: bearded

From a MoveON email: On Sunday morning, Christian Coalition founder Pat Robertson told TV viewers nation-wide that the threat posed by liberal judges is "probably more serious than a few bearded terrorists who fly into buildings." When an incredulous George Stephanopoulos asked if Robertson really believed that these judges posed "the most serious threat America has faced in nearly 400 years of history, more serious than al Qaeda, more serious than Nazi Germany and Japan, more serious than the Civil War?," he responded, "George, I really believe that." I don't...

May 3, 2005 11:23 AM: Dashboard

Unlike Hoover who cannot cease the praise, I was undecided when I first played with the new Dashboard of Mac OS X Tiger. The default widgets weren't all that great, though visually pleasing. It was when I started digging around on the Tiger website that I found the ones that really interested me. I've got a widget that I drag files onto to automatically upload to my server. I've got a similar one that uploads to Flickr (which I'm using the heck out of). I've got one tracking my...

May 1, 2005 12:37 PM: ebflo -> no!

I'd encourage everyone to avoid ebflo.com.(update: Apparently no one works on the weekend, so it was fixed on Monday morning. Still too long in my opinion) A few days ago, I got the monthly update from Justin McRoberts; in it was a link to ebflo.com where you could download Justin McRoberts' latest. I was interested and so I visited the site. It looked alright, so I bought a song to see what it was like. A few minutes later, I finally receive a confirmation email that I had, indeed,...
