January 28, 2005 02:43 PM: cousin bill cheney

At the official rememberance of the liberation of Auschwitz, European countries sent their best, dressed at their best in rememberance of the solemn ceremony. We, on the other hand, sent our cousin Bill. Seriously, who dresses like that at a Ceremony remembering Auschwitz?...

January 27, 2005 12:05 PM: seeing the wizard

Fabulous article in the NY Times today about the Genius Bar available at Apple Stores: The concept of a bar came to Mr. Johnson one night when he was thinking about the kind of environment Apple wanted to create in its stores. He said he was inspired by Four Seasons, the Ritz-Carlton and other hotels where service is paramount. "We believed you had to bring the people dimension back into retail," said Mr. Johnson, who joined Apple five years ago after 15 years at Target. "We thought, What about giving...

January 26, 2005 03:25 PM: oh, glory!

Today was a very, very good day. FedEX delivered unto me a 20" Apple Cinema Display and a Dual 1.8Ghz G5 PowerMac. The iBook has served me well, but will tempt fate with a new owner via eBay. So far, the new setup is superb. The "Power Tower" (as Adam and I call them) is wonderfully fast. I've yet to find anything that can slow it down. The Cinema Display is beyond awesome. I see colors and shades I never saw on the iBook. That's saying a lot, because Apple...

January 23, 2005 12:01 PM: movin on...

Let me tell you, it's painful to have to post something new. By doing so, our naked friends of the East will be relegated to history, and I'm sure that everyone will be sad to see them go. Goodbye Friends. Moving on... Last night, I commuted to work, in what I hope to be the first of many times. Ever since I started the bicycling, I'd wanted to shed the car in favor of the bike more often. But it's hard because of the goofy outfit and the helmet-hair. Oh...

January 18, 2005 09:00 PM: remembering abu ghraib

Now that the one-sided outrage of the Abu Ghraib incidents has passed, it's interesting to tally up the score. Gonzalez gets promoted to Attorney General. Rice gets promoted to Secretary of State. General Tommy Franks, who bungled the Iraq invasion, CIA Director Tenet who called WMD's a "slam dunk", and Paul Bremer who had the unlucky job of leading post-war Iraq all got the Medal of Freedom. Now if that's not a joke, I don't know what is. The lesson here is: If you're going to fuck it all...

January 18, 2005 11:26 AM: mowrer: defense of cynicism

when you got it, you got it. see bottom for a rebuff. There are churches in the city.  I’ve been to them.  So why are the people I spend the most time with so untouched?  At my school of 1000 students, I still don’t know a single Christian.  It’s like being one candle in a thousand square foot apartment.  And it’s the same experience anywhere I go in the city.  Unless I’m within the walls of a church, everyone I meet is completely unaffected, completely unreached, by true believers.  Eight...

January 17, 2005 05:52 PM: postal experiments

Having long been genuine admirers of the United States Postal Service (USPS), which gives amazingly reliable service especially compared with many other countries, our team of investigators decided to test the delivery limits of this immense system. We knew that an item, say, a saucepan, normally would be in a package because of USPS concerns of entanglement in their automated machinery. But what if the item were not wrapped? How patient are postal employees? How honest? How sentimental? In short, how eccentric a behavior on the part of the sender...

January 15, 2005 01:00 AM: she's 83

To the Editor: In "Exit, Snarling" (editorial, Jan. 9), you mention that "The Daily Show" is "especially popular with young people." I am 83 and make sure to stay up to 11 p.m. to hear my buddy Jon Stewart and his talented friends. He not only is a breath of fresh air but also makes me laugh out loud. We surely need more of that in this "scary" world President Bush has dumped us in so he can stay in power. It is sad that we have to go to...

January 12, 2005 02:13 PM: snopes: seat belts

In this vein, we note with a sense of both sadness and irony a couple of articles recently called to our attention. The first is a 17 September 2004 editorial published in the Daily Nebraskan and entitled "Individual Rights Buckle Under Seat Belt Laws," by Derek Kieper, a 21-year-old senior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, in which the writer inveighed against mandatory seat belt laws, opining that "Uncle Sam is not here to regulate every facet of life no matter the consequences," and that "Democrats and Republicans alike should stand...

January 11, 2005 01:30 PM: the mini

SO SEXY! I can't believe Apple brought back the Cube, well the 1/2 Cube! Now there is no reason not to own a mac. It's powerful and small and pretty, all for around $500. When was the last time you saw Bill Gates or Michael Dell make people as crazy as Steve Jobs can. It's like Christmas for Mac people. New flash-iPod, new iLife, new mac's....

January 10, 2005 12:18 PM: donations.

It always makes me wonder. I watch American's see a tragedy on television and the money starts flowing. Sure, we've got more of it than anyone else, but it's still surprising to see American's give so generously. But stop the commendation right there. Millions died in the Sudan, raped and murdered by the Janjaweed and it barely made the news and got little reaction from the Administration. Three-hundred thousand more died in Sudan Refugee Camps from hunger and disease. No word from the media. The population of street children...

January 7, 2005 03:10 PM: let's try again

comments are working again, in an unmoderated fashion. you ought to just be able to post without using typekey or any other tricks. in a day or so, we'll see if the changes i made have any effect on the deluge of comment spam. one complication so far has been the speed at which the comment script finishes loading. so if you comment, don't freak out if it takes a long time after you press "submit". it accepts the comment immediately, but for some reason takes it's sweet time loading...

January 7, 2005 01:33 PM: macworld SF

It's just three days until Macworld San Francisco opens. It's a big time for mac users and lovers of style. Expected to be announced are a sub-$500 g4 mac, bigger iPod Mini's, a flash-based iPod, iLife '05, an iPhone made by Motorola, a new office suite, amongst others. It's going to be huge! So huge in fact, that they've announced new products, that would have usually gotten considerable time, early due to the numerous bid things they'll announce....

January 6, 2005 12:04 PM: good!

Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., signed a challenge mounted by House Democrats to Ohio's 20 electoral votes, which put Bush over the top. By law, a protest signed by members of the House and Senate requires both chambers to meet separately for up to two hours to consider it. Lawmakers are allowed to speak for no more than five minutes each. CSPAN @ Noon...

January 5, 2005 11:55 PM: failing historically

Bruce Cole brings it:     If no Senators come forward to demand the investigation that the evidence requires, then the very Party that once produced the great social advances now systematically being destroyed by those who stole this election will itself start to dissolve. But that dissolution will have been self-initiated.     The reason I know that the Democratic Party is standing on the brink of self-annihilation right now is because it is about to alienate the very people who can save it. I am just one of tens of millions of...

January 5, 2005 11:51 PM: jowls

Not long ago, I got up, mixed the proper pre-measured amount of water with the proper pre-measured amount of formula, stirred it up well, picked up the baby, settled him in my lap in his favorite feeding position (reclined), picked up the bottle, and inverted it over M. Tiny’s mouth preparatory to slipping in the nipple. Whereupon I realized—too late—that I had forgotten to screw the nipple back on. Yes, I literally threw my son’s drink in his face. He took it really well. In fact, he had no reaction...

January 5, 2005 11:48 PM: from the chief

The purpose of this memorandum is to inform you of the Army Reserve's inability under current policies, procedures and practices ... to meet mission requirements associated with Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. The Army Reserve is additionally in grave danger of being unable to meet other operational requirements ... and is rapidly degenerating into a 'broken' force. Dave Pell makes a great joke about questioning what limp-wristed liberal wrote this memo. It's revealed that the Chief of the Army Reserves penned this gem. Four more years, indeed....

January 4, 2005 01:45 PM: honest election or not?

from truemajority: The whole world now knows what went on in Ohio and other states on Election Day, and we simply can't let it happen anymore. We know that many Americans in inner cities were prevented from voting by eight-hour lines. We know that local officials changed the rules on which votes they counted. We know that technicians from computerized voting companies were allowed to tamper with balloting machines unsupervised. Elections with those sorts of problems are not honest. The winners of these tainted elections assert that their outcomes didn’t...
