July 30, 2004 02:07 PM: record deficit

Apparently, not spending more than you make is not a concern of the White House. Anyone else, and they'd be bankrupt. WASHINGTON — The White House projected Friday that this year's deficit will hit a record $445 billion, further fueling a campaign-season dispute over President Bush's handling of the economy. The figure easily surpassed last year's $375 billion, making it the largest-ever in dollar terms. That gave ammunition to Democrats who say Bush's tax cuts and failure to prevent a loss of jobs during his term have worsened the outlook...

July 27, 2004 01:31 PM: Fahrenheit 9/11

I've never left a movie angrier, so angry in fact that I really felt like there was no hope for any of us and I should just die. As I've mentioned before, I work at a place that is so Super-Republican, that I want to cry at how ignorant my fellow employees and bosses are. I say ignorant, because they just don't have a clue. There's a vast difference between someone not knowing, yet still arguing, and someone who knows and fights for it. I know it's common in...

July 25, 2004 11:17 AM: Shame on You O'Reilly

Bill O'Reilly is something else. I have more disdain for him than probably anyone else. He's a pathological liar, a hypocrite, and a complete disease on society. Granted, Fox News is a disease on society, but Bill O'Reilly needs someone to set him straight. Lessig, one of my favorite writers, and a champion of fighting for your rights to intellectual property has taken O'Reilly to task for his treatment and subsequent lies about Jeremy Glick. Glick appeared on the "no spin zone" aftert 9/11. He had lost his Father in...

July 24, 2004 10:49 PM: my response

The following was written in response to some comment non-sense at the Third Floor. Since Haloscan wouldn't let me post all of it, I'm putting it here (with a pretty picture) for all to read. Who let the RNC start posting here? Seriouly though, there's not a single thing that would keep us safer under Bush than if Kerry were in office. I've said that thousands of times, along with many others. Read the 9/11 commission report, it states very, very plainly that the Bush War on Terror is...

July 23, 2004 06:41 PM: wow!

I need more tv's!! Tivo's for $49 and $99!!...

July 21, 2004 08:57 AM: Electoral

A site watching the State polls, and then applying them to projected electoral college votes, shows Kerry with a killer lead if the election were today. John Kerry 332 George Bush 195 Despite an endless stream of national polls showing the race to be a statistical tie, veteran readers of this site know that Kerry's lead, currently 137 EVs, has never been so large. Considering the fact that the Washington Post reported today that the Democrats have raised more money than the Republicans this year, Karl Rove has his work...

July 20, 2004 01:30 PM: four more years

President Bush says at a rally today: After four years more in this office I want people to look back and say, 'The world is a more peaceful place,'" Bush told supporters at a community college in Iowa. "Four more years and America will be safe and the world will be at peace." Really? At work, I've been found out. Most of the store knows that I'm a semi-liberal Democrat with a bone to pick with the Administration. Not a day goes by that I don't get made fun...

July 19, 2004 09:55 PM: The Spines

They Might Be Giants released a new album last week. It's available for download on their website at iTunes prices in mp3 format. These guys have always been a group I've admired. I remember first hearing them back when I was young. My sister had just gotten the first cd player our family had ever owned and Flood was one of the first cd's she bought. I remember listening to "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" and others and wondering what in the heck was going on. This music was good and...

July 18, 2004 05:07 PM: sarsparilla?

A few weeks back, I bought a text ad from Haloscan. I was bored and felt like mocking the Third Floor. Not a single person noticed out of the 10,000 times that little text ad appeared. I was bit puzzled because I know from personal experience that every three times a Haloscan comment page was reloaded, my ad would appear. (Apparently, there's not a big line of people waiting to purchase HaloScan textads). So I'm having to post it here, because, well, I paid 10 dollars and what a waste...

July 17, 2004 12:13 PM: Abuse at Abu Ghraib

An unreal MeFi thread about previously un-reported Abu Ghraib abuse. Iraqi women beg to be killed as American soldiers sodomize their children (link is an .rm file, the bit about mothers and children starts about 1:31), according to journalist Seymour Hersh who reports seeing unreleased footage from Abu Ghraib. The question remains unanswered as to why he'll talk about it in a speech, but not publish it in the New Yorker. It's also worth asking, if these allegations are true, who else has seen this footage and why is it...

July 14, 2004 01:50 PM: not a good ride

Today, I went for the longest ride of my cycling career. Not by choice, but it was the longest. I went out west of town, just a little north of Cagle's Steakhouse. I was going to ride east and west since there was a wind out of the south. That all changed when just a mile or two into my ride, I ran into two very angry dogs. The problem with dogs is that it's just you versus them and those suckers are fast. Today, one almost got to me...

July 13, 2004 01:57 PM: fuh2

I have a disdain for the Hummer H2. I've found the penultimate site for haters of the H2. http://www.fuh2.com The H2 is the ultimate poseur vehicle. It has the chassis of a Chevy Tahoe and a body that looks like the original Hummer; i.e. it's a Chevy Tahoe in disguise. The H2 is a gas guzzler. Because it has a gross vehicle weight rating over 8500 lbs, the US government does not require it to meet federal fuel efficiency regulations. Hummer isn't even required to publish its fuel economy...

July 13, 2004 10:15 AM: are you ashamed?

This past July 4th was very strange for me. It was the first one I've not celebrated. Throughout the day, I didn't think about it. While at work, I scoffed at all the people wearing their Old Navy July 4th t-shirts because I had finally realized that I was no longer proud to be an American. I'm completely ashamed at claiming America as my home. Look at how we treat others. In Iraq, thousands of innocent civilians died; over a thousand soldiers are dead. For what? Look at how...

July 12, 2004 02:42 PM: Who really flips?

"We removed a declared enemy of America who had the capability of producing weapons of mass murder and could have passed that capability to terrorists bent on acquiring them. In the world after September 11th, that was a risk we could not afford to take," Bush said. As the Bush Campaign labels Kerry as a flip-flopper, it's fun to see Bush do the same thing... all the time. Today, look at his language. Before it was: "Iraq HAD weapons of mass destruction!" Now it's: Iraq "had the capability of producing...

July 7, 2004 02:14 PM: Arlington to Czech

Every day, I find something new that makes me dislike Bush even more. Maybe this is the reason we have non-existant relations with many of our strongest allies. Playing ball: Baseball has been very, very good to President Bush - who reaped a $14 million windfall profit when he sold his stake in the Texas Rangers years ago. And Bush has been very good to major-league baseball owners. Mother Jones magazine reports that at least five current and former owners are Bush-appointed U.S. ambassadors, including former Seattle Mariners owner George...

July 6, 2004 11:42 PM: cycling, the update

I'm getting more adept at riding and I'm seeing significant gains in certain areas. Overall, it's been wonderful. I feel better about myself and I know I'm embarking on something that can change my life for the better. However, I can't live in West Texas because riding into a strong wind is both horrible and demoralizing. With a nice tailwind, I can ride 25mph easy. Into a strong wind, it knocks me back to 10-14mph. It's so bad sometimes I have to turn the mount on the computer so that...

July 6, 2004 10:31 PM: Military Families

I often wonder why anyone who has a son or daughter or spouse in the service would support President Bush. If I've got flesh and blood in harm's way, why would I choose the loose cannon? I guess it's ignorance or blind faith. Today at work, I ran into a woman who was wearing a Sheriff's star with the words "President Bush in 2004". She was leaving a little trinket for one of our chef's to give him grief about his support of John Kerry. As she explained to me...

July 6, 2004 05:43 PM: John & John

Dave Pell get's it totally right Edwards has looked like the most likely choice for several weeks now, so the decision probably didn't surprise too many people. It certainly didn't surprise RNC operatives who immediately released a lengthy dossier (which makes the Clinton memoirs seem concise) asking the question: Who is John Edwards? They answer their own question by explaining that: "John Kerry was against John Edwards before he was for him. But now he's his running mate. Who is John Edwards? A disingenuous, unaccomplished liberal and friend to personal...

July 4, 2004 08:47 PM: electablog*

There's a really great op-ed blog on politics that I think some might enjoy. Dave Pell is an incredibly concise writer that has a great perspective. I see a lot of my own beliefs in what he writes, but he does them justice, where as, i just mumble and bitch and get frustrated. So on this Independence Day, check out what Dave Pell's newest post entitled: The Other Election: The Pro/Anti Kerry Race...
