October 31, 2003 09:22 PM: Horrible ShotDid anyone else see this? When I watched it the first time, I really thought that the shooter had missed the guy 6 times. It really looked like only bullet came near him. He apparently got him a few times, but this guy should be embarassed. If I have the opportunity to shoot you from point-blank range 6-times, you aren't going to be able to walk off to get help. It's like he was using a BB gun....
October 28, 2003 06:24 PM: Salling Clicker!!Allow me for a moment to laugh hysterically at a new found love for my mac and cellphone. ........ Ok, I'm ready to explain why! A week ago, I got a new cellphone. Cingular has finally upgraded most of Texas to a GSM network and is offering phones that do more than just, you know, call people. I bought a sleek, sexy new Sony Erricson T616. It's beautiful and has a built-in digital camera. I still haven't figured out how to post the pictures to the PhoBlog from my phone,...
October 25, 2003 12:37 PM: two times?ROME, Italy -- Actor Jim Caviezel, who plays Jesus in Mel Gibson's controversial film "The Passion of Christ" was struck by lightning during shooting. Caviezel was uninjured, but a producer described how he saw smoke coming from the actor's ear. An assistant director on the film, Jan Michelini, was also hit -- for the second time in a few months. The first time, a lightning fork struck his umbrella during filming on top of a hill near Matera in Italy, causing light burns to the tips of his fingers, VLife,...
October 24, 2003 05:53 PM: OS X Panther! October 20, 2003 09:05 PM: Op-EdIt's interesting to see that the NY Times wrote an Op-Ed about Lubbock's dependence on farming subsidies. It's an interesting read, but doesn't pull it's punches when going after Lubbock's economy anchor....
October 18, 2003 05:09 PM: 96/4Over the past few weeks, I've learned the true meaning of the 96/4 rule. I doubt anyone has ever heard it before, but it's just a simple reminder about service. The idea is: Of 100 people who are dissatisfied with your product or service, 96 people will walk out the door unhappy, while only 4 will tell you about it or make a scene. I think everyone can benefit from knowing this rule. Any business, church, or group should know this because it speaks volumes about how important complaints are....
October 16, 2003 06:05 PM: iTunes for WindowsYou've all heard me talk about the Apple iTunes Music Store... Well, now those of you still stuck in 1990 on Windows PC's can use it too! http://apple.com/itunes/ for the free download May I recommend Matt Nathanson's new album "Beneath These Fireworks" as your first download?...
October 13, 2003 09:43 AM: doesn't take muchPSA Broadcasts Objectionable The other day, I called my favorite a.m. talk radio station to let them know that I was getting rather tired of listening to a certain religious group's advertisements all throughout the day on that particular station. I was told that not only are these advertisements not paid for by the religious group for that air time, they are considered "filler" when there are not paid advertisements at any given time; they are called "public service announcements," or PSAs. Many times, I have switched stations to avoid...
October 12, 2003 12:24 AM: Those Crazy CatholicsThere's an interesting article at Yahoo News about how a Cardinal with the Catholic Church is claiming that condoms can't prevent the transmission of AIDS. Intersting why, you ask? Well, there are hundreds of studies that say condoms are 100% effective against the transmission of the AIDS virus. So do you believe the Church or the Research? I'm siding with the research... Update: While I suppose it's unfair to pin this statement on the Catholic Church as a whole, we can't look past it. This Cardinal is head of...
October 10, 2003 12:01 AM: iPod Nation: No UnityIn the past, I linked to an amazing article at Apple Matters about the iPod and how a sense of community is built through ownership. I simply posted a tidbit of the article and posted a link. This was July 5th. Today I received an email from the editor as follows: From: Date: Thu Oct 9, 2003 8:13:09 PM US/Central To: regan@somewherequiet.org Subject: please remove AppleMatters content While I appreciate that you must like AppleMatters I'd rather that you not take the content of one of our writers and publish...
October 8, 2003 08:11 PM: the american rhetoricOn campus there's been lots of talk about homosexuality and how it's just something we're going to have to accept because it's not wrong. Today, there was a mini-debate in the campus newspaper. As I read it, I remembered how sad this world has become. This first guy's article was so ridiculous that I don't even care to post it for all to tear apart. I disagreed with so many things he said, that it's futile to try to explain why. Go read it if you will, but you won't...
October 5, 2003 10:44 PM: Holy Cow!In honor of the Cubs first postseason series victory since before I was born, I will tell you why I'm a Cubs fan. One man: Harry Caray. From about age 2-22, I've loved the Chicago Cubs. From about age 2-22, they never won anything (until today). They have always been the lovable losers with the old, cool ballpark and the rowdy fans. I grew up watching the Cubs lose while sitting in my dad's lap in the afternoons. Because Wrigley is in the middle of Chicago, they have to...
October 5, 2003 02:54 PM: Wrecking CrewI mean, Wrecking Who? I spent a good deal of my life watching Aggie football while my brother and sister were there. What's happened? I thought Coach Fran was going to be their Savior, but they hardly put up a fight. Unlike the Aggies of old......
October 3, 2003 09:37 AM: hold the cow still...LONDON — A peace activist attempted to pay a court fine with a check chiseled on a small tombstone Friday, as a protest at the number of civilians killed in the recent war in Iraq. Court officials refused to accept the check. Nick Buxton, a 31-year-old aid worker from London, was fined 120 pounds (US$200) for blocking the entrance to a military base in January. His "check," complete with account number signature, was made from cast stone and weighed about five pounds. On the reverse side was written "RIP 25,000...
