shocking: drug plans ineffective!
Study: School drug plans ineffective
The top three programs used by schools to keep students away from drugs are either ineffective or havenít been sufficiently tested, new research suggests.
Allow me to comment on this for just a second. Drug prevention programs in America have always been a joke. As for myself, the only time i really ever remember a drug education program being implemented in LISD was way back in like 3rd grade. All I really remember about it was that this police officer has this little chest of drugs and he was explaining to us what each one was. I vividly remember the spoon with the white powder in it, and i remember him showing how you hold a lighter under it to achieve the desired effects. As for a means of prevention, I don't really think that's terribly effective. I think this was before the time of CrimeDog or whatever his name was, but it makes me wonder. Why do we target a group of people who aren't going to use, nor even remember the information in 8 years when the chance of them using is greatest? We tell children that drugs are bad, but simply stating that something is bad isn't going to stop drug use. I've heard the old argument that you've got to get to them when they're young, but i think drugs are entirely too complicated of an issue to be addressing in 3rd grade.
Why shouldn't I use drugs? No one really answers that question. All the focus is on saying no, or not using, but they don't back up that statement with anything that means a damn. If you tell me not to do something, i want to know exactly what the consequences of my actions will be. I want to know the punishment, the physical dangers, as well as the emotional toll. Once i have that information, I will then make a decision for myself. Is the risk greater than the reward? Apparently, this whole concept is lost on the people we give charge to eliminate illegal drug use. Simply put, these programs are ineffective and never will be effective because they don't address the problem.
