Texas Tech student Joshua Nelson said he believes no one religion should dominate a society.
"Christianity dominates the United States like the Muslim Taliban dominates Afghanistan," he said.
Nelson, a graduate student studying mathematics from Lubbock, said he agrees with the decision made by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to take away the words "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance.
"I am happy the words were taken out of the Pledge, but they should not have been put in in the first place," he said. "I believe kids should not be forced to say the Pledge in schools, it is not the military."
The University Daily is really good at finding people with extreme views. But really if you think about it, it's easy for them; their building is right next to the math building. Math breeds libertarians.
My problem with the UD most of the time is that it's unbalanced. As journalists, it's almost a requirement to hate organized religion and aim all your work at discrediting a fundamental American establishment. I don't know why this is, but it's there. Just read back-issues of the
UD or the
Batt. I think our culture has gone from religion-loving to just being scared of religion. It's as if journalists and other educated people are scared of the thought of a higher being. God scares people with higher education, because it goes against everything that college teaches us. In college, you aren't taught ethics; it's the last-man standing that wins, they say.
