NEW YORK, Nov. 12 Ñ An American Airlines flight from New York to the Dominican Republic with 255 people on board slammed into a residential area shortly after takeoff from John F. Kennedy International Airport on Monday, igniting a fire that engulfed about a dozen buildings in the borough of Queens. Bush administration officials said it appeared there was an explosion aboard the plane and that the FBI was attempting to determine its source.
update:Some witnesses said that one of the planeÕs two engines exploded and fell off the aircraft in midair, but federal investigators said they had not confirmed that an explosion had occurred.
